Something a bit lighter now; a straight up Hitchcock; The 39 Steps from 1935, so 86 years young. this is the criterion bluray and very clean it is too.




The 39 Steps is another in a line of Hitchcock films based upon an innocent man being forced to go on the run, including The Lodger (1926), Saboteur (1942) and North by Northwest (1959). The film contains a common Hitchcockian trope of a MacGuffin (a plot device which is vital to the story, but irrelevant to the audience); in this case, the designs for a secret silent aeroplane engine.

That is the one with Robert Donat - an absolute classic, and IMO, the best version.

But if you want weird - go no further than "Eraserhead"; Lych's first big-screen film. Should be seen by everyone.

Not watching right now, but earlier tonight - "Knives Out", on Sky Cinema. I wasn't expecting much, but turned out to be quite good, if you like Whodunnits. Even Mrs. P sat through it all. Cast included Christopher Plummer, Daniel Craig, Toni Collette, Don Johnson and Chris Evans.

The Rebel, 1961.. It stars Tony Hancock and was written by Ray Galton and Alan Simpson. Supporting cast of George Sanders, Irene Handl, Paul Massie, John Le Mesurier, Liz Fraser, Margit Saad and Dennis Price.

Avanti!, 1972. Directed by Billy Wilder, and starring Jack Lemmon and Juliet Mills. One of my all-time favorites this. Superb script and acting.. Glorious locations and direction at its best.

A real classic this morning from the Criterion bluray stable. The Night Of The Hunter, 1955. Directed by Charles Laughton(his only directed film) and stars Robert Mitchum.






Laughton's initial thought after reading the novel was to cast himself in the role of the preacher, but Gregory convinced him that no studio would finance a film unless they cast someone else. For the most part, he didn't hold traditional auditions for the actors; he simply met with them to get a sense of their personalities and whether they were right for the role.

Laughton considered casting Gary Cooper as Harry Powell, but Cooper did not accept the role as he thought it might be detrimental to his career. John Carradine expressed interest in the role of the reverend, as did Laurence Olivier, but his schedule wasn't free for two years. Robert Mitchum was eager for the part of the preacher. When he auditioned, a moment that particularly impressed Charles Laughton was when Laughton described the character as "a diabolical shit," and Mitchum promptly answered "Present!" Laughton liked Mitchum for the role partly due to his sexual persona, but Grubb was concerned about the character of the preacher being considered sexual. Laughton told him, "If you want to sell God, you have to be sexy."
