I totally *get* that last bit, if you're single (as cooking can be therapeutic), but otherwise that's what a wife is for!

In those days, Del worked 9-5 in a fairly undemanding office job, whereas I was out until all hours, so it was only right that she had a meal ready for me when I got home

As for 'lunch is for wimps' lol, well that was always the joke, but not when you're Italian. Good food matters! If I didn't have a nice Parma ham sandwich, made with crusty bread from the local deli, or some such, I'd have been a VERY unhappy bunny!

Besides, it's bad for you not to eat, and also unproductive, as your body needs proper fuel to sustain it, Maybe this is why I'm a healthy bastard now, with no ailments to speak of, simply because I looked after myself properly when I was younger?

I wasn't single I just didn't like my then partner's cooking lol. No, to be fair she was great at the meat and two veg style of cooking but couldn't do pasta, curries etc. (she tried bless her). So I usually cooked for myself. More often than not (and I still do this now) I'd cook a lot more than I need and freeze meal size portions for nights when I didn't fancy cooking from scratch.

I got by ok with the little and often style of eating through the day back then and in any case calories were often augmented by a pint or two of Guinness at lunchtime

I'm in rude health other than my neurological condition and that's nothing to do with my diet then or now.

When I left home, I became a vegetarian for a couple of years. It was great in terms of learning a little about spices, as vegetarian food needs spicing in my view.

It's personal taste of course, but I'd say not so much 'spiced', but well-seasoned and prepared with the use of fresh herbs. Spiced only if it forms the basis for Asian cuisine or such like.

However, the most important thing, a bit like fish, is that it's as fresh as possible. Bad veggie food almost always stems from the use of poor quality source ingredients!

I like bacon, occasionally, but I wouldn't rave about it, and as with sausages, I'm uber-fussy about the type I'll eat, simply because the cheap (mass produced) stuff is full of nasty cack.

Yeah but eyelashes and bits of old carrier bag improve the flavour Truthfully, we only ever get decent sausages, and sometimes VEGETARIAN sausages! Hanging my head in shame.

I'll eat salami and chorizo and that but never liked 'British' sausage no matter how fancy it is. Nothing to do with ingredients I think it's the texture aka 'mouth feel' that puts me off.
