Two US guys roasted to death last week in an autonomous car crash. Apparently nobody was in the driver's seat, it happened at high speed.

Yes 37mph (= 59kph), my mistake. Even so, I can still see it being engaged on motorways when the traffic is moving freely.

You could argue people should just learn to be better drivers/pay proper attention but we all know that won't happen. If every car was autonomous there would be fewer accidents, that's a fact.

Maybe, but it also effectively hands over control of your vehicle to whoever controls the 'Smart network', and with the potential of that to be abused in future.

My goal is to RETAIN control of what I own, not relinquish it. In that respect, for me, the whole concept of these driver-less cars and 'Smart motorways' is a massive red flag, in terms of the impingement of your freedoms!

And neither would anyone with any passion for driving or concern about where things are headed in future, However, you can rely on your average dimwitted 'Joe' to simply roll over and comply, in the so-called name of 'progress'!

Smart motorways don't have anything to do with driverless cars, totally unconnected. If you've been on the M6 in the past few years you've been on a smart motorway.

At the moment all cars with driverless capability can be over-ridden by the driver. I don't think you have anything to worry about there. I can't see it being made compulsory, not in our lifetimes.

no smart motorways up here, or any plans either... mind you we dont have a lot of motorways really.

My board engineer has a Tesla which has the temporary auto drive (20 seconds I think). He's tested it on all sorts of road in all traffic conditions, it puts not a single foot wrong ever.

It's a gradual introduction but I can see that in 20 years' time nobody would ever remotely consider driving "manually". Not yet, but it's coming.

Yes, but also they hadn't enabled the Autopilot system, so it's akin to getting out of the driver's seat in a standard car that isn't equipped with auto-drive. It'll definitely crash.

Heaven help is then, mate. Count me out. It's not a world I'd want to live in!
