I have had many experiences of older kit going wrong and simple functioning outside its original specification and unfortunately cartridges have lots of tiny bits of wire and rubber inside that can age and malfunction easily. I know a few folk who have had newish cartridges that have all performed poorly because of internal issues.
Indeed I have had a few cartridges re tipped and rebuilt which once opened have been found to be out of specification internally.
