Continuing with the oldie week, one of the greatest, "Casablanca", 1942. Directed by Michael Curtiz, and stars Humphrey Bogart(again) and Ingrid Bergman. Lots of stars in the back up too including Peter Lorre, Paul Henreid and Claude Rains. Dooley Wilson who was a drummer to trade and actor was Sam the pianist(play it Sam). He pretended to play piano and the director wasnt keen on his singing voice eitherbut it stayed fortunately..
For Bergmans shots they used Obies and gauze filters to get her just right.(a great job they did too)

Watched that last week. Shame the modern ones don't live up to its standard but no surprise really. Actors like George Cole and Alistair Sim really knew how to wring the maximum out of the scantiest of material, a skill that seems to have been lost with the latest generation.
I love the bit where Fritton smells Flash Harry's ('She's no right to use that name in official communications!') hair.

A high budget of $163m just turned a $10m profit.. Not a bad film tho. Interesting and novel idea.

Sunset Boulevard, 1950. Directed and co-written by Billy Wilder. Stars William Holden and Gloria Swanson.
The film was and still is highly regarded, and did make a decent profit at time. Louis B. Mayer berated Wilder before the crowd of celebrities, saying, "You have disgraced the industry that made and fed you! You should be tarred and feathered and run out of Hollywood!" Wilder told him to go F**k himself. Mayer apparently also said he should be sent back to Germany, which so soon after the Holacaust was disgraceful.
Anyway Gloria Swanson produced one of the great film performances and after viewing the film, Barbara Stanwyck knelt to kiss the hem of Gloria Swanson's skirt.
