They are a specially designed and selected military version of the 6SL7 as far as I remember. They really are a very nice valve. I totally recommend finding a pair.

Yeah, that's a belter... The 'big brother' 3-head version of mine. It'd have gone for much more if it hadn't had that fault - although no doubt nothing a good engineer, such as Chris, couldn't fix!

Well, the cartridge and SUT landed on Wednesday and I've been really enjoying both since! The 103GL in particular is everything I'd hoped it would be, and sounds simply STUNNING!
More on that later, including a review of my full impressions... In the meantime. some pics of her in my Denon PCL-300 headshell, fitted with Kondo SL-115 solid-silver headshell leads, and in situ on my T/T, after having just fitted it with the Houdini:
New Funk Firm APM Achromat (double-layered with a glass base, and which retails for £170). More on that in the forthcoming separate review):

Best mat I've ever used on the Technics, especially combined with the Houdini (as both items 'pull together', in terms of creating optimal isolation of the negative effects impeding accurate vinyl replay), resulting in maximum information retrieval and minimal coloration - buy with confidence!
