My blu ray player is Panasonic, but it's about 4 years old now. Probably not quite good enough for my LG OLED telly, and I can't summon the enthusiasm to replace it. Just laziness I guess. The last blu ray disc I bought was "Once upon a Time in Hollywood", it was months before I got round to watching it, then 5 minutes later it was on Sky Movies.

The problem is, my armchair is here, and the discs are all the way over there. Strange how I'm happy to get up every 20 minutes to turn a record over, but for viewing I just want to press buttons.

Also the picture is a bit crap when everything is going through my ancient Sony AV receiver, so just using telly sound at the mo. Everything changes so quickly, but I will have to address this - Anita misses the big bangs (this is where you jump in, Marco)

I've never run the picture through the amp, don't see the point of it. I only use a standard 2 channel hi-fi amp these days though, it has a DAC with optical in and I just run optical from the back of the telly into the amp. You forget how crap the built-in TV sound is until you plug in a proper amp and speakers. So much more enjoyable with decent sound.

But are you sure that your optical is just carrying the audio? I'd always assumed that the optical and HDMI outs from the telly carried sound and picture. This way sound and vision was always in synch. maybe I was just being thick - when it came to A/V i just moved wires and switches about till something happened, then left it alone. A case of "well it's working, but I've no idea why"...

Hdmi does audio, video in sync. Before that you needed to use an audio cable and video. Best bet was optical audio and a dvi plug to keep sync

But are you sure that your optical is just carrying the audio?...

Yes.

Previously used a Sony 7 channel HT receiver for sound -coax from cable box into the receiver for sound and scart from cable box into telly for picture. No sound sync issues

Then telly and cable box got upgraded so couldn't do that anymore as no scart outputs or inputs - The bloke in Richer Sounds where I got the new telly told me to use optical from telly into a DAC. Since I had an amp with built in DAC lying about doing nothing it was a cheap and easy solution, £7 for the optical cable and Bob's your mother's brother.

I've also got an optical cable that has a DAC built into it so I can use an amp that doesn't have a DAC in it. But that's still in it's box, never tried it. Think that was only a tenner.

I started out last Christmas (when I bought this 4K telly), running a HDMI from the Sky box to the Sony AV amp, then HDMI from that to the telly. I assumed the HD credentials of the amp were the weak link as the picture didn't look right. So I cut out the amp and speakers and just run the Sky box straight to the telly. that improved the picture but now I just have sound from TV. Seems a bit of a waste, as the surround sound stuff is all MA Radius speakers, and a decent BK sub.

I should have a word with the good men of Richers on how best to make it all work

Don't get it... I'm doing exactly the same as you, with very similar gear, hooked up via HDMI, (Monoprice 4K compatible cables) and I've got the Odeon in my living room!

Cables may not be of right spec. Maybe get better ones(not Ness dearer)
Some have wrong spec, and swapping in a different cable fixes it.
Also need to check that all setti gs are correct

Run an optical from TV into the Sony amp apropos achieving surround sound without running picture signal through the amplifier.
