they get a bit squished together but usually survive if no other issues are present. it happens usually to newish layers before they are settled to the task etc.. they pop 2 ovums out right after each other and they travel so close together they get combined in the albumin and then the shell. might be slightly larger but not double sized

They used to be backlit for visual inspection, the light outlining the contents of the egg in silhouette through the thin shell, but I expect it's usually automated now. Small farms may still do this though.
