Erm, that's based on a 7805 which is what we've been getting away from.

The PH regs I fitted in the Sabre dac are just under 30 quid a piece for the small ones, they are expensive compared to standard three pin types, the main advantage with the more expensive ones is that their impedance is much lower over a far wider bandwidth, their much better at rejecting PS noise and very low noise on their output, this might not seem a big deal but in some circuits this can bring a huge gain in the way the device performs and sounds where as things like op-amp swapping and cap rolling tends to alter signature

A gyrator infront of a standard reg (as seen in the pic above) can be a cheap and pretty effective way of cleaning the crap up on the input, you still have the standard three pin reg though so the gains tend to be smaller

People are reporting good results with the Murata switching regs Stan recommended so it seems these are a worthy upgrade over the three pin types too and not too expensive

Yes, agreed, however I'd prefer the reduction in noise by placing the gyrator after the noisy regulator. You can always increase the overall welly of the circuit to try to keep the current capability and output impedance low.

The Teddy's regs (SuperTeddy) are nice, I'm considering building one to play with it, perhaps to feed the Caiman.

I tried the smaller TR's in a few other dacs mainly output stages, I added a CRD on the output or a simple loading resistor when used with say op-amps. I couldn't get on with them tbh but please don't let that put you off, their pretty cheap to try and a lot of folks like what they do
