I've long held that dealing with local independent suppliers is the way to go. I'm on first name terms with them all, and I know if I have a problem with something or just need some advice, they will bend over backwards to help.
One particular supplier gives me 'unofficial' credit - I pay them after I get paid. It's worth paying a little extra for this kind of service, but you know what, they often prove to be a bit cheaper than the big chains, who may sell you a Karcher pressure washer cheap, but pull your pants down if you just want a tube of silicone.
