Plenty of non-smokers are quite tolerant, and sensitive to the 'needs' of others - they understand that smokers don't do it to piss people off.

    The worst ones are:

    1. "Born again" non-smokers (If I can give up so can everyone else)

    2. Mard arses who have grown up surrounded by people who made it their life's work to make the world safer and more comfortable for them.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

For somebody who has smoked for many years, even the transition to vaping can be tricky. For some, abruptly doing without nicotine can induce feelings of illness. It does with me. Fortunately, after many, many attempts at trying to give up smoking, I've managed to adapt to vaping, but if it wasn't for this, I would have to revert to cigarettes.

For an employer to force nicotine addicted workers to endure a whole day without a 'fix' is not doing anybody favours. It's not about setting standards or benefitting anybody, it's just to make life difficult. Smokers should be encouraged to vape, it does far less harm to them and is pretty innocuous to others. People should be helped, not bullied!

    Hear hear, Geoff!

I can only hope that the selfish, arrogant and out of touch wankers who came up with this unjust and unworkable idea don't get their way, as it would set a very dangerous precedent for the powers that be to exert yet more of their control on our society.

We need to continue to fight against such mind control/brainwashing and remain FREE for as long as possible!

I assume the council employees get paid for their lunch break?

If not then they can smoke then, it's their own time.

I've worked plenty of places were you couldn't just nip out for a smoke anytime you felt like it. One place I worked where they treated staff like adults and allowed smoke breaks at your own discretion I used to just have one roughly mid morning and one around mid afternoon. Which I thought was reasonable. But when I'd go out I'd find there were more employees in the smoking hut than in the office. Sometimes it was so full you'd have to smoke outside. And it was a pretty big multi-room portacabin.

So eventually they stopped it. Some people will always take the piss and ruin it for everyone.

Yeah I think it's the same with a lot of things - the employers should come down on the offenders, or a least have a word, but it's easier and less likely to result in claims of discrimination, persecution etc. if they just close the door on everyone.

I was told of a pizza manufacturers near me that used to allow the employees to take home "seconds", which would be a nice little perk, until these pizzas started showing up in certain corner shops. So no more free pizzas for anyone.

Collected a travel visa today. There was a small, but very vocal, protest outside the embassy. Was amused to see as many police in attendance as there were protesters.
