Don't dismiss trying the ERA Gold V. I had one until recently. It's a lovely phono stage. I've since bought a Reflex M, which is a little more detailed, but to be honest, the ERA Cold V was just as enjoyable. It has a 'wideband' sounding presentation, you get the impression of very tight, extended bass and a top end that reveals all cleanly. Neutrality and depth are very good. You'd never guess whether it was solid state or valve unless you looked. It just does everything right.
