The day - today
4 December 1971
During a rock concert by Frank Zappa And The Mother's of Invention at the Montreux Casino in Switzerland, a flare gun was fired by an audience member into the ceiling, causing a fire which destroyed the venue.
The rock band Deep Purple, who were there to use the casino to record their next album, witnessed the blaze from their hotel and it would be immortalised in their song "Smoke on the Water".
4 December 1993
American musician and composer Frank Zappa died on the same date as the Montreux fire 22 years earlier,
aged 52.
