To my ears, the Asgard 2 is more fun, enjoyable sounding, than most other headphone amps I've had. Detail is sharp, without being overly ear-piercing.
One rip-off example, is the Sugden HA-4. To my ears, it just doesn't sound like a £1,700 headphone amp. The Sugden just sounds average and overly 'solid state' for my liking.

Thanks for your thoughts, Shane.
Music is not made for listening HiFi...
As I said just the other day, I find headphone amps much of a muchness personally... My Sennheiser HD580 cans are so easy to drive (300R load) that anything drives them just great, from the headphone sockets on my laptop and PC to the sockets on CD player to a high end class A headphone amp of my own design... No more than inconsequential Nth degree differences between any of them! YMMV.

Just get an old Teleton amp for twenty quid and use the socket on that. Sounds just fine.
It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

I don't like to use the headphone socket on amplifiers... but I'm sure the Teleton would sound just fine
Seriously though although I'm not saying there are no audible difference between say plugging the phones into a laptop or using a high end head phone amp I would not sat the difference was large or of any real consequence...
