Be carefull in what you plug into the pi as far current is concerned, the pi circuitry iis limited to supplying a maximum amount of current no matter how big the power supply.
If your not sure, look up the spec, For hard drives and NAS drives i would recomend using ones that have they're own power supplies.Originally Posted by lovejoy

The specs for the Pi B+ and the Pi 2 are that you can have 1200mA delivered to the USB ports rather than the 600mA of the original models. 1200mA will be ample (no pun intended) for USB2 and 3 2.5" hard drives and I've had this set up and working without any issues.

has anyone played with the bit-depth yet? Any thoughts?
I can alter the bit depth so long as it stays at 44.1khz but I can't seem to move up on the khz scale as it jumps like mad.

I can confirm too, that I've tried using an external 2,5" HDD (WD MyPassport 500GB) without any problems, but needed to tweak the config.txt with additional line (max_usb_current=1). Before this tweak the HDD didn't work. However I continue to prefer using a NAS, rather than local HDD.

Not that interesting I know ...but just an update.
I've just come back from Pimorino in Sheffield where I purchased a wifi dongle (now working perfectly). They now have the IQAudio DAC boards in stock.
I originally bought a Pi with their "Coupe" case. The spacers supplied by IQ are too large for this combination. Pimorino fitted me with some extra 'feet' that now support the front edge of the DAC board. They promise to look into the 'issue' so that anyone ordering from them will be confident that the Pi and DAC boards will fit their cases. I think it wise, if ordering from them that you mention the spacer issue and ask them for their best advice. I spoke to Matt who is very helpful.

On another issue, is anyone else having problems in shutting Volumio down? All I get is a dark(er) screen and a 'connecting' wheel that never stops. I re-imaged Volumio onto the micro SD card but the problem persists.
Again, thanks to Marco and Martin T for their help and inspiration. I have a Synology NAS on order too so will be interested in how that performs.
I've got the bug and am enjoying listening to my music all over again. My Caiman2 now seems a little redundant (perhaps I should try the HiBerry into Caiman alternative...?)

When you shut down I think it just goes in to a dormant state (not totally off) so Volumio sits waiting for connection. Even if you leave it for a while it seems to go dormant hence Volumio waits to connect. I simply refresh the page and it pops back to life although the HDD can sometimes need a restart but not always.

Actually I think this is normal. When you click the TurnOff button from the browser, the RPi starts the process of shutting down the OS, so the lan connection is cut and the browser couldn't connect anymore with the RPi. That's why is this endless wheel. When you click turnoff button, you can just close the browser window.
