I've not been able to drop in on this discussion for a while so I am not really up on what is going on. However, my reading of the chip spec was that these settings are either on or off so what you are seeing is to be expected. Playback is the analogue control and will either give you 1v or 2v rms max output. You should just set that to the level that works best with your preamp. The boost appears to give an additional gain of 0.8dB (according to the IQaudIO docs) and is either on or off.
