Default Acoustic Energy AE509 loudspeakers Review - From Tannoyista

    Hi all.

The latest review is now up and live.

This time, we're looking at the Acoustic Energy AE509 floorstanders. These came into Tannoyista for review, and they're surprisingly bigger-sounding than they look.

    Full review, here:

Enjoyed reading your review, also appreciate the great quality photos and the classy layout of your site in general.

AE speakers have always impressed me on demos but never owned any or had any here at home.

Just one point, your review specification lists them as a three way speaker, 'The Ear' review has them as a two way.

I think, from looking at the quite sparse info available, that they are actually a two and a half way design, with the upper driver doing midrange and bass, and the lower one just bass. Which would be typical for an MTM design, although there's some MTM designs where both drivers receive an identical signal, they are rare. HK used to offer one back in the 90s.

    Hi Martin.

Many thanks, glad you enjoyed reading the review.

Yes, Acoustic Energy are one of those companies that I'd like I review more. The build quality is really very nice indeed.

I'll look into your note. Thanks for that.

Excellent review Josie, however the tweeter isn't the only one with a carbon fibre diaphragm.

SB Acoustics do a Satori TeXtreme dome tweeter with carbon fibre, I have some in my speakers.
I love Hendrix for so many reasons. He was so much more than just a blues guitarist - he played damn well any kind of guitar he wanted. In fact I'm not sure if he even played the guitar - he played music. - Stevie Ray Vaughan

    Hey Alan.

How's you? Hope all is good with you.

Many thanks, glad you liked the review.

I did do some research on Carbon Fibre used in other loudspeakers and tweeters and came across those from SB Acoustics. I didn't know you used those. How do they sound?

The ones in the AE509s sound very nice indeed, no nasty ear grinding harshness.

    Hi Josie, good thanks.

Yes I have Arke Audio Solo standmount speakers, unbelievably good, mesmerising transparency and clarity.
Really flat frequency response and low distortion to boot.

Arke Audio is demonstrating at the hi-fi show at Cranage Hall this coming weekend, I shall be there on the Sunday if you are possibly going?

    Hi Alan.

I wish I could have got to the show. I was planning for Sunday but I had a huge drive on the Saturday and just couldn't do a 4hr round trip on the Sunday.

    Hope you enjoyed it.

A quick update on these speakers...

They've been in the system now for a while and I must admit, they're sounding really nice. I found that a little adjustment on the toe-in has made a big difference.

Quite remarkable judging the size of these. Great, fun speakers.
