Saturday Matinee, Battle of the Bulge. 1965, Directed by Ken Annakin, and starring Henry Fonda, Robert Shaw, Telly Savalas, Robert Ryan, Dana Andrews, and Charles Bronson.

Although its not exactly an accurate depiction of events, it still holds the attention well..

Its difficult to condense a month into 3 hrs..

That's a shockingly bad film. Even Robert Shaw can't save it, that's how bad it is. And historically speaking it's just terrible. Pretty much everything is wrong, the vehicles, the uniforms, the events...

There's only one good scene - the bit where Shaw goes to inspect his new unit and is dismayed to find they are a bunch of kids, but they win him over with their National Socialist ardour. They should have got whoever wrote that bit to write the rest of it!

it gets an audience rating of 68% so watchable by anyones standards.. very few war films are actually accurate especially 20 years on when there is very little original equipment available.
it has some good battle scenes and decent acting etc.. sure its not going to threaten the battle of britain or a bridge too far but if you insist on that quality all the time you wont watch much

I don't know who's giving it 68%, I'd give it maybe 10%. Fair point about quality levels but interestingly there is actually more Axis WW2 equipment available now than there used to be. Some German AFVs have since been recovered and restored. When 'A Bridge Too Far' was made there were no working Tiger tanks in existence so they were forced to use a Leopard Mk1, which is just crap but no option. The rest of the film is of a high enough standard that it can be excused.

There is now one working Tiger tank although I don't know if they would let it out to be used in a film https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger_131

I suppose if they were making it today it would all be done with CGI.

That's the one. Supposedly they kept the ending secret from Veronica Cartwright so her reaction would be more genuine. Always fancied Veronica Cartwright.

funnily enough it was extremely popular in the box office, which shows folk like a bit of action etc and mostly dont give a rats toss about accuracy but yes, pretty much everything bar the name of the battle(and thats not its right name anyway) is totally inaccurate, including the cesna fonda was in, which wasnt built til 49, bit was used as it had a starter motor
