The Day Will Dawn, 1942..
Extras for the assault scenes on the Norwegian coast included both actual Norwegians who had only recently escaped to England, many wearing their actual kit, and British "Tommies," some of whom had made the same assault landings being recreated in this film.

Just finished watching this ten-part series last night, and it is EASILY the best thing I've seen on TV in a long time.
Tim, Sam, and Billy Bob
It's called "1883", and tells the story of veterans of the Civil War/gunfighters leading some European immigrants on the Oregon trail, and dealing with every kind of shit imaginable on the way. I've never seen anything on TV coming so close when it comes to "authenticity" (though I only have their word for it). The actors, their performances, the sets, the costumes, the scenery... just incredible.
Star of the show has to be Sam Elliot, who was born to play this part. Also starring Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, with appearances from Tom Hanks and Billy Bob Thornton. As cinematic as TV gets, a total masterpiece. Showing on Paramount +.

'Escape From Alcatraz' (1979)
Clint Eastwood is put in the titular prison and has to escape, with the help of some pals including the bloke from 'Tremors'. Patrick McGoohan does a quality turn as the twitchy warden.
The similarities of this film with the much later 'The Shawshank Redemption' are quite striking. Sent to escape-proof prison, harassed by a rapist, goes to work in the library, meets an old boy who is losing his marbles, and another who can help him with the escape.
The escape plan is the same (tunnel out the cell), the warden is twitchy and cruel, and the guards are sadists - (note: in a prison film either only one guard is a sadist or they all are. There's no in-between).
Anyway a good film, it was the last time Eastwood and Siegal worked together.

It is Grant. I can't recommend it highly enough, if there's any way you can see it I know you'll be bowled over too. Absolutely every detail has been thoroughly researched and carefully recreated. There is another series following this, called "1923", starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. I have high hopes for this too, and will start watching it tonight.
