Just watched Apocalypse now, don't know why I put off watching this again for so long, its a cracking film. I am amazed by the soundtrack though, it's fucking blindin', not the pop songs, the rest of it. Need to get this on CD.

Appointment in London, 1953... bluray... aka 'raiders in the sky' in America...
This movie was filmed at R.A.F. Upwood. The Lancasters used were NX673, NX679, and NX782. These aircraft also took part in the filming of The Dam Busters (1955).
Co-writer John Wooldridge - who also wrote the score - was formerly an RAF pilot who who flew 108 missions, reduced to 90 in the film to make it seem more credible; he later wrote in his diary that Dirk Bogarde said to him that it was "the best script he had ever read".

The Two Jakes, 1990...
At a movie theatre in Florida a patron left his seat to tell the theater manager that the reels of the movie were running out of sequence. The manager went to check and confirmed this, but then told the moviegoer "this movie's been playing here for three weeks and you're the first person who noticed that something was wrong."
A key prop in the film is a wire recorder--a machine that uses a magnet to record vibrations into a stainless steel wire as it passes through the machine. The quality of recording was actually quite good for the time, with the sound of the playback resembling that of a slightly tinny telephone connection. While magnetic tape recorders had been produced since 1930, they were extremely expensive and not easy to find. It was not until the late 1940s that the British firm AMPEX began to develop the medium that they began to gain popularity. A big influence in the development of audio tape, and whose efforts resulted in the development of consumer reel-to-reel machines (and later audio cassettes), was Bing Crosby--the world's most popular singer at the time.
The wire recorder in the film is a Webster-Chicago Model 80, which was manufactured between 1948 and 1950. Functioning specimens and videos of the machines in action are available from various online sources.
