Is this the most hated movie of all time? and quintessential moron movie of the 80's were a few of the critics responses to the film, now classed as a top 10 film in horror.. it barely broke even at box office but found new life in the home media market.
i have to say i liked it first time out.

I watched it too, after Martin provided the heads up. Had heard of the film, but never seen it before. It was ok, quite atmospheric in parts, but for me nothing special, and some of the acting was distinctly of the 'gammon variety'!
Interesting and quirky, but very much of its time. I'm actually enjoying '13 Ghosts' more, from a similar era. which has come after it

There's just a few bits in it that are really good, like you say, the 'atmospheric' scenes like the windstorm. Originally the demon was not going to be shown, it could just be smoke or mist, and so the whole story would be more ambiguous. But the producers insisted on a monster so they has to add in the crap effects. Although I think there is a version without the close ups of the demon, which are the worst parts.
I reckon making a really good horror must be the hardest of them all. I don't count those slasher pics as horror. A proper horror has to have atmosphere and some psychological aspect.
'Alien' and 'Jacob's Ladder for example, but there's not many.

Yes, I fully agree, and slasher fests don't really do it for me either. What do you think of some of John Carpenter's output? I'm a big fan of his.
'The Fog', for me, is superb, as is 'The Thing'.
