Was talking about the film 'Sahara' with a youth at work who is into films, I quickly realised he was talking about the remake with James Belushi, I said to him that the original with Humphrey Bogart was better.
He says 'Who's he?' Has to look him up on the internet. Told him to watch 'The Maltese Falcon.' But he probably won't.

the evil people can do is brought firmly in focus in this film. a very well made film.
now, They Who Dare, 1954...bluray.
this is another very good film... "undeservedly the least-known of director Lewis Milestone's sound films. Set in the Aegean sea during World War II, the film recounts the exploits of Britain's Special Boat Squadron. ... Robert Westerby is credited with the screenplay of 'They Who Dare', and Lewis Milestone insisted the story was taken verbatim from the reminiscences of the squadron's two survivors."
Russian born director Lewis Milestone was dragged into the McCarthy witch hunts during the early 1950s and fled to England to escape being vilified and questioned in the US. This is one of the films he made in the UK during that period.

In the train, after they discover that Drake is to receive the Medal of Honor, Murdock quips that maybe the president will let Drake "sit on top of his piano". This is a reference to a then-scandalous photo of Harry S. Truman playing piano with a leggy blonde on top that was taken at the National Press Club in 1945. The blonde was Lauren Bacall, later the wife of Humphrey Bogart.

Of the original cast of Whisky Galore! (1949), only Catherine Lacey, Jean Cadell, Duncan MaCrae and Gordon Jackson reprised their original roles.
During the political discussion towards the end, one participant is Michael Foot who was a Member of Parliament 1945 to 1955 and 1960 to 1992 (so wasn't when the film was made) and who became Leader of the Labour Party. Another was Robert Boothby who had also been an MP and was elevated to the Peerage soon after this film was made.
Vehicles/aircraft include . . . David Brown 50TD (Trackmaster) diesel crawler (bulldozer). Land Rover Series I, original 80-inch wheelbase model. Bristol Sycamore (helicopter). Blackburn Beverley (4-engine heavy transport

When the news about the rare pink gull is reported in the press, a newspaper is shown with the headline "Rocket Isle Bird Unique Say Experts". Although the opening paragraph relates to this, the following paragraphs are from a completely different story about the estrangement of actors Deborah Kerr and Anthony Bartley, who divorced the year after.

One of my fave films, it has some great character actors, that Wilmer guy! And of course Lorre and whoever that fat man was! Bogart's best film next to The Big sleep.The Maltese Falcon, 1941..
