“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Zep, Purple, Sabbath. Maybe some others I can't think of.

My heartfelt apologies, I misinterpreted your comment.

The first three all involve a kind of droning effect to some degree, ie a sustained guitar noise. Shoegaze was floppy-haired indie youths who were always looking down as they played. Post rock is all about the texture and effect of the noise. Black metal began as a rather silly ultra fast metal but now has more loud shimmery bits, if that makes sense. Anyway, my point there was that three subgenres that came from different tribal groups have now converged. It's an evolution but not a step change.

For NWOBHM I should really have just said heavy metal. The new wave of... bit referred to the likes of Iron Maiden and Saxon.

So even though I think there's still a lot of great new music, I don't think we'll see such innovation and major new genres as we saw in the '70s.

    Cheers,

    Pete

Why is it necessary to label everything as being of a category or genre? It's all subjective anyway! I can imagine some acts being indignant at being mis-bracketed .
It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

so you knew where to look for the music you liked in big record shops. Back when there was such a thing.

I mean you don't want to be trawling through all the country and western or whatever when you're looking for a death metal album. And vice versa.

wouldn't say The Cure were Goth although some Goths liked them. Sisters Of Mercy, that was Goth.

Anyway you know you're not going to find Emmy Lou Harris filed under 'Grindcore' so at least it narrows it down a bit.
