seems to me the problem with the republic thing is everyone gets to vote for head of state, so when you get some lunatic orange con-man or some dizzy old geezer in it looks bad on your country.

Whereas with a monarch its hereditary so no-one is to blame if they are rubbish/embarrassing/do a flit to Argentina with all the bunce.

One way round that would be to have being head of state as a lottery prize - 'It could be you!'. And you get to do it for six months or maybe a year then it's someone else's turn.

That way we don't get the moaning about 'unearned privilege' and it's no-one's fault if they're crap.

Indeed. You get to live in a big house and don't have to worry about money but other than that it's all downsides.

Allegiance to the Head of State is the way I see it. No problem for myself as I am a supporter of the Royal Family and do not like the idea of an elected Head of State as per the mess there is in the USA with the likes of Trump being able to get elected.

Just sounds pathetic, i would be interested to find out who came up with the idea: if it were Charles, then a disturbing insight. If anyone else, then what an example of arse licking.

I'd suggest it was someone in the Govt, maybe even the PM, it has the smell of Tory about it

I read it was the archbishop of Canterbury who came up with it or at least decided to do it. Given his recent history of criticising the govt I think he's a bit of a lefty and it wouldn't surprise me if he was secretly a republican as well despite the King being the head of the Church. So if this is the case, I suspect he knows it will make a lot of people annoyed and potentially make the republican movement stronger.

    My first thought too.

I mean he's the Archbishop of Canterbury, I don't think there's ever been one who wasn't a bit of a lefty. Maybe that one who got whacked out years ago?
