    Default Thump

I have had a large thump for many years that is heard through my speakers when I turn on/off my turntable motor. The turntable is very well earthed ie the tonearm is earthed and I have an earth wire connected to a ground on the back of my preamp.

All my RCA cables are shielded as are all my mains cables. However the earth cable is not shielded.

Do you think shielding the earth cable would help?

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

    ^ what he says,

Sheilding the earth cable will not change things IMO.
I love Hendrix for so many reasons. He was so much more than just a blues guitarist - he played damn well any kind of guitar he wanted. In fact I'm not sure if he even played the guitar - he played music. - Stevie Ray Vaughan

No the thump is not audible at all when I turn down the volume. I think it is some electrical surge that is probably picked up by the tonearm cable which is highly exposed as you can see in the picture or by the preamp?

I take it that you cannot switch the loudspeakers out?

I wonder if the preamp is picking up the noise of the motor switching on and off and causing the thump. Not sure if there is anything I can do about it?

Mine does the same and has done for years, all my kit still works and no explosions. I wouldn't worry about it.

Surprised no-one has asked if it's a normal thump or an ecky thump.

    Current Lash Up:
