That is why I walk past most record collections - unless the sleeves are in reasonable condition, they don't get a look.

Even worse are those house-clearance whallas who just dump the records out in piles one or two feet high.

Album cover status is not an indicator of vinyl quality, indeed, I’ve picked up many perfectly silent examples. A little persistence goes a long way.

I disagree - the condition of the cover is a good indication of how well the owner has looked after the record.

It is no guarantee of course, but it is unlikely that anyone who plays records and who takes care to clean them and check the condition of the stylus, would throw the covers about, scuff or crease them.

Yet, I have very occasionally bought a used LP having a perfectly clean, shiny record surface, free from any hairline scratches, yet sounded noisy because it had been played with a worn stylus.

It's all a bit of a gamble, and is heavily dependent on how much the seller is asking.

Obviously you'd never bother looking at the condition of the disc but I bet that was just as bad.
Must be the types that offer a 'selection' of LPs (10 or so) on ebay for £££s - assume they just scoop up a handful, with no choice involved, and voila - you have the beginnings of your very own record collection !!

If the album cover is rough as a badger's arse I never bother with it. For all I know there may be a decent disc inside, but part of it for me is the album art, and I'm not giving house room to a cover that looks like a skip find.
I just dropped in, to see what condition my condition was in

I once rejected a copy of EWAF 'I Am' because it had a birthday inscription on the inner sleeve.

It was neatly written in fountain pen, it just felt wrong to buy someone else's present. Fortunately there was another copy that was unmarked. Both only a quid.
    Current Lash Up:

I know how you feel, but if the recipient of the LP had grown out of it and wanted to sell it then so be it. You could always replace the inner sleeve.

I have a similar problem with second hand books; sometimes they have an inscription inside, and you can't really tear out the page.

I couldn't really replace the inner as it has notes and photos on it, it isn't plain.

Funny enough it doesn't bother me with books.

Bit embarrassing though that the book you bought last week was inscribed "Happy 7th birthday Charlotte, love from Grandma and Granddad"
