Quite agree Chris, unfortunately to get the audiophile resolution a certain level and cost is needed, but that can be tempered with sensible 2nd hand higher end purchases. I was very lucky with the Marantz Pearl

I am very pleased with it, and as you say red books CDs can sound very good. Most so far have been very good but the odd one has been only ok so presume either bad master in first place, dodgy re-mix in transfer or poor transfer to digital.
