“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

Today was brillliant - first good day in a very long time. No rain - a lot of sun - really quite warm. Went for quite a long drive via Lairg and Ullapool and I believe we heard a cuckoo between Ardross and Ardgay. Really didn't expect that at all. Managed to find a cafe for lunch, and sat out. I expect all the holiday makers clogging the roads up will be thinking "we wish we lived here - beautiful weather, beautiful scenery" etc. They shouldn't ignore the rule that places you go to for holidays may be really c**p outside the holiday season.

That's what I found about San Diego - went in early summer one year - lovely weather. Years later went later in the summer and the weather was really oppressive, but somone who lived there said - "Oh - it's always like this" and he agreed it wasn't nice. Now Monterey is somewhere I could settle!

I was in San Diego end of September and it was fine, sunny, about 25C, couldn't fault it. Nobody on the beaches though, I think they must all stop doing that at the end of August. If it was that weather in the UK you wouldn't be able to find a space to lay a towel out after about ten in the morning.

San Diego - on a good day - which I think is many of them - is very good. From memory it's not so good in August. Still warm, but muggy. The point I was trying to make is that people often like places they go to on holiday, and think the weather is always good. It isn't!

Also heat can be a problem. Often it's quite nice on holiday, but places which have a high ambient temperature are not so good if one is trying to work, and people expect air conditioning - which often fails.

Today is looking good so far. Sunny morning, and should get up to around 20C. Might go off slightly later on, but no rain or wind forecast.

So true, and whenever I go abroad for a holiday I always find myself pitying those I see with outdoor jobs - I couldn't stand that, the only thing worse might be working outside in sub-zero temperatures. We probably have it just right in Britain, temperature extremes are quite rare.

MSN weather on my laptop says it's currently 12C and cloudy, though it's hard to see the screen with the sun bouncing off it and making my eyes water. And has been this way for half an hour now. I suppose I could go and sit over there, or close the blinds, but I'm y'know, lazy. MSN Weather is crap.
