Default Buying new kit from Europe

The seller will sell without VAT being added, but what's the sting in the tail? Certainly VAT, but are there any other duties to pay.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Thanks Grant. I think I will phone HMRC on Monday. I hate expensive surprises.

If I get a sensible answer I will post it here for others.

Yes there is 20% VAT on that too, and 20% VAT on the shipping charge.

Clearance charge usually between £12 and £15

    A result of brexit.
Estimate 33% on top of cost.
There is a system to pay in advance (avoiding carrier charges) but finding a carrier who does this is aparently hard.
Am currently waiting for such a package-shipped by DHL's Formula 1 division, it seems( who carry the cars etc., about the world!)

Yep Brexit was always going to be a mixed bag, we all had to balance the pros and cons and make our mind up before we cast our votes. Democracy in action.

The only thing Brexit has added is the duty and the clearance charges, and then only for buying from the EU since you already paid all that when buying from anywhere else in the world prior to Brexit.

You always paid VAT even before Brexit, plus some EU countries have a higher rate of VAT than in the UK so you actually paid more than 20% VAT if buying from one of those.
