If you already own a recording of the Brandenburgs, but are on the look-out for a different perspective, Christopher Hogwood’s 1984 recording still has much to offer.

It remains the only set to present the concertos in their early versions, before Bach revised them for the Margrave in 1721.

It's not obvious that they do:

Have you heard The Boston Baroque recording? It is new to me; though I'm not that keen on Teldec recordings.

They've got period instruments in the photo. You can hear them in the recording anyway. (I include authentic copies in that definition.)


Is Boston Baroque on Harmonia Mundi USA? I struggle with a lot of their recordings, the violins seem to have a bit of a "sheen" to theml (for want of a better word), and they are quite echoey/reverberant, I'm not sure where they are recorded.


Sorry just saw you mentioned Teldec, yes I struggle with those a bit too. Can sound quite hard although that might be the ADD recordings I've heard (CMW/Harnoncourt).

I don't know why, when I hear some Harnoncourt recordings, I picture someone turning a crank and a big old machine playing all the instruments, they just don't seem to have a natural, human flow to them.
