Have you heard any authentic versions of the Brandenburgs? I do struggle myself with modern style performances.

Boston Baroque, dir. Martin Pearlman. (1996)

The following do not use period instruments but are played by ensembles that specialise in 'early' music:

Rupprecht Drees (trumpet), Isabelle Faust (violin), Antoine Tamestit (viola), Raphael Alpermann (harpsichord); Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin
    Harmonia Mundi HMM902686.87 84:06 mins (2 discs).

J.S. Bach - The Academy Of Ancient Music • Christopher Hogwood – Brandenburg Concertos / Concertos BWV 1060, 1062, 1064

    Label: L'Oiseau-Lyre – 455 700-2
    Series: Double Decca
Format: 2 x CD, Compilation, Reissue
    Country: Europe
    Released: 1997
    Genre: Classical
    Style: Baroque

    Christopher Hogwood (director)
    Academy of Ancient Music (1984)
    Decca 455 7002

If you already own a recording of the Brandenburgs, but are on the look-out for a different perspective, Christopher Hogwood’s 1984 recording still has much to offer.

It remains the only set to present the concertos in their early versions, before Bach revised them for the Margrave in 1721.

It's not obvious that they do:

whereas The Academy of Ancient Music do use some period instruments or modern replicas.

Have you heard The Boston Baroque recording? It is new to me; though I'm not that keen on Teldec recordings.

They've got period instruments in the photo. You can hear them in the recording anyway. (I include authentic copies in that definition.)

Is Boston Baroque on Harmonia Mundi USA? I struggle with a lot of their recordings, the violins seem to have a bit of a "sheen" to theml (for want of a better word), and they are quite echoey/reverberant, I'm not sure where they are recorded.

Sorry just saw you mentioned Teldec, yes I struggle with those a bit too. Can sound quite hard although that might be the ADD recordings I've heard (CMW/Harnoncourt).

I don't know why, when I hear some Harnoncourt recordings, I picture someone turning a crank and a big old machine playing all the instruments, they just don't seem to have a natural, human flow to them.
