What exactly are these and how do they work?

They are super tweeters which are meant to operate above the upper limit of human hearing (i.e. above 20kHz). The transducers use the piezoelectric effect - they can be regarded as being similar to a crystal (or ceramic) cartridge, but operating in reverse (i.e. signal voltage in, mechanical movement out).

I couldn't hear them at all but they changed the air if that makes sense.
I wasn't expecting any improvement but a mate had tried them positively so I did and he was right. You don't have to hear something to feel a sense of something is my conclusion.

But hey ho, everyone's take is different.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

I agree. The upper limit of my hearing is below 10kHz, yet I can hear the effect of filtering out the harmonics of a violin laying above 20kHz.

If you can, try to get hold of a demonstration disc made for JBL to promote their speakers, as well as to help with setting them up. It's called 'Sessions':

One of the tracks consists of a solo violin playing a piece of music. The following track is the same piece but a 15kHz low-pass filter has been applied. The same with the next track, but the cut-off occurs at 10kHz. The changes due to filtering out the harmonics are quite clear to hear, despite my not being able to hear pure tones above 8-10kHz.

I can thus well imagine that supertweeters might have a beneficial effect, especially in providing a sense of 'air' or ambience, and I certainly wouldn't dismiss them. Some claim their use improves the focus and imaging of the instruments and vocalists

Note sure if it is connected, but the 'sirens' of emergency vehicles now intersperse the audible siren with bursts of white noise, as it has be found that it helps with the location of the source if the vehicle cannot be seen directly.

Grant is correct in they seem to add 'air' to the music. Not only is treble improved but so is the mids and bass.
I've had a pair for years and they are still going strong.
