The Absolute Sound magazine started in 1973, so I don't think the late Harry Pearson coined the term 'audiophile'. I used to subscribe to the magazine, attracted by the way the (subjective) reviews for a particular item of gear, were made by several reviewers who owned different systems.
I also liked the imaginative covers used on the A5 sized magazines. I stopped subscribing after issue 28.

I'd say anything more than a few hundred quid for a stylus was snake oil.
