Rolling Stone Top 100, how many of these have you listened to?

I think you have to accept that it’s supposed to be on worldwide record sales, however I find that odd as there are quite a few albums I can think of that sold vast amounts not in there. Dark Side of the Moon comes to mind, and I’m pretty sure Genesis sold the odd album in vast quantities as did Wings and ELO.

Well at least it prompted me to pull out my copy of 'Bitches Brew' and listen to all four sides. Interesting - I found myself enjoying two of the sides; so that is a 100% improvement.

Yes it can be a 'difficult' listen. I rather like it though (and his other 'out there' stuff). I've always admired his ability to make the music he produces interesting and thought-provoking, whilst traversing a whole gamut of music styles. Unlike that of other artists, it's not just samey and predictable!

Were you not tempted to follow it with some Sun Ra, after your 'result' with BB?

I used to have a copy of 'Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra', but can't find it - so I must have given it away.

Coincidentally, I was watching a programme on BBC4 last night about a cultural phenomenon called "Afrofuture", in which clips of Sun Ra appeared.

Like many exponents of 'free jazz', such as Pharaoh Sanders; Ornette Coleman; John and Alice Coltrane; Albert Ayer etc., Sun Ra's music needs time to absorb and understand.

Just noticed this top 100 from Rolling Stone is quiet arbitrary as Marco indicated.

"The RS 500 was assembled by the editors of Rolling Stone, based on the results of two extensive polls. In 2003, Rolling Stone asked a panel of 271 artists, producers, industry executives and journalists to pick the greatest albums of all time. In 2009, we asked a similar group of 100 experts to pick the best albums of the 2000s. From those results, Rolling Stone created this new list of the greatest albums of all time."

So it really depends who they asked and their preferences. Even other lists based on records sale volumes seem to vary somewhat.

At least the Rolling Stone list gets it about half right. Asking music journalists was probably where they went wrong. Most of them are clueless about proper music. Especially anyone who worked for the NME. Or 'Q'.
