Here are a couple of pics. They work out over a grand built.

I think the TDL RTLs were let down by the cheaper drivers, and I'm not sure the cabinet was as good as their Studio range either, that's where the quality was. If these are upgraded to the level of the Studio range them I think they'll be quite nice.

I'm not sure how the "Reflex Transmission Line" concept works though. It sounds like an attempt to find a hybrid to make the cabinet easier/cheaper to build if anything, but I'd like to know more.

It was just a fancy name for a port.

The RTL series did not have anything in common with the Studio series. But as budget speakers they were pretty good. I had a dem of the RTL2 and 3 many years ago when they were still current products.

You've had much better speakers in the past, Steve. Like those Ruark Crusaders. The RTLs don't come close to those.

Maybe it's a reflex box with an extended port equating to something like a 1/16 or 1/8 wavelength transmission line, but one principle relies on resonance phase inversion, the other would use the comparatively small amount of in phase signal at the exit of the line. I think IMF had a similar description with their ALS40 and ALS30 designs, but those terminated the line into an active driver. The B&W DM2 was an 1/8 wavelength line too, worked fine.
It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

Seems what they do is put a right-angled shelf inside at the back of the box, with a gap/slot between the vertical portion and the back wall of the cab and a gap between the horizontal portion and the bottom of the cab

So the back wave from the driver goes down the slot, across the bottom of the box and out through the front ports at the base of the speaker. The width of the slot determines the frequency of the bass tuning.

So it isn't a conventional reflex pipe but it's not a transmission line either.

Can't quite picture that any chance of a little diagram?

What Hifi in the links (RTL2 and Bass) describe it as true TL in the box which is very wrong.

Sounds a bit like a TQWT.
“Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of fuel. Sentimental people call it inspiration, but what they really mean is fuel. I have always needed fuel. I am a serious consumer. On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio”

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”
