    Default New...longer term project

Hey Folks......hope everyone is keeping well.

If this is posted in the wrong area...please feel free to relocate.

Fair warning, this will be a longer term (probably a couple years) project...but I thought it would be neat to post pics of each stage.

I was mentioning to a neighbor that I wanted to build my own stereo stand......and that some of the more high end stands were made from solid hardwood.....often maple.

Well he took it upon himself to head out to the family farm where they were culling a few trees...took down a maple (70 years old)(that needed to be taken down)......cut part of the trunk into 3 - 6 foot 5" lengths........hauled it out to his cabin in the woods....where he just happened to have a saw mill.........and cut it into 2.5" thick slabs.

Dropped off two 6'5" lengths yesterday where they will sit in my garage for the next year slowly drying out.

....which thankfully gives me time to work on a design, pick up some power tools needed etc. etc.

Anyway.......pretty cool and super excited.........and a bit overwhelmed. LOL

So consider this step 1 in what I hope is a series of pics I will take towards finished product. Next pic probably not till 2022

if i remember rightly from college to air dry it takes a year for a 1 inch plank. the real trouble starts as soon as you take it into a house with central heating.

looks like the bark is off, so thats good. i'd also paint the ends with parrafin wax to slow down moisture evaporation

The chap who did all this for me is a Horticulturalist-Arborist by trade......I believe he painted the ends to slow down the drying process. I basically nodded my head when he told me what to do. I`ll dig up a couple other pics of the process to date.

These pics are outside of Winnipeg in an area called Aggasiz Forest. (about 1.5 hour drive) My friend has 80 acres of bush where he`s built himself a log cabin....where his saw mill is set up. He is very much into solitude. I`ve never been there...always wanted to but respect that this is his quiet spot. Super neat guy....an old soul....leftover hippy is how I would describe him.
