    He is dead?
It is shame he did not make 100, as he missed out on the telegram from the queen.

Indeed, but what I'm getting at is the *hugely OTT* TV coverage of his death (and also his life up until that point), as if it's automatically presumed that everyone in the UK is a Royalist, and therefore happy at having their usual programmes unceremoniously cancelled, in order to 'enjoy' endless coverage of this stuff.

You'll be missing it in France, but we've had virtually nothing else on the main TV channels here since the poor chap popped his clogs yesterday.

Oh trust me, I am not missing it.
I remember when Princess Di died. The day of her funeral, I went out for the day in my car. It was awesome.
Hardly a soul on the road. I set off from Bristol, and headed up through Wales to play on the Evomtriangle.

I don’t really watch much TV though. The TV I do watch, I record, and watch when I want to, or when I have time.

It is a shame he has died, but 99 is a bloody good innings. He did some good things in his life, but also çame out with some hilariously non PC comments.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Indeed, it's ridiculous, although it bothers me greatly for many different reasons!

I remember when Princess Di died.

So do I. I was working at a music venue in Berkshire. Cashed up, locked up, 5am. I was going back to my Old Fella's as we were heading for Anfield to watch Liverpool v Newcastle,4pm kick off. The cab driver told me what had happened, so I stayed awake till my Dad got up and explained why I thought the match would be called off.
No chance , he said. It's on TV. Not worth arguing, so I get in the back of the car for the 200 mile trip and went straight to sleep.
Woke up some time later to see us heading in the wrong direction on the M6. Game cancelled at 11am.

I'm no royalist but I do think there is a lot to admire about Philip.

However the BBC coverage was just totally OTT; the same programme broadcast on all BBC TV channels (BBC1, BBC2 and BBC News 24, with BBC4 off air) at the same time and the same programme broadcast on all BBC Radio channels (R1, R2, R3, R4 on FM at least) at the same time. Fine changing the schedule to respect his death, and running special programmes on one of the main TV and Radio channels, but ALL of them?

God help us when the Queen dies; we'd better stock up with toilet rolls again.
