I agree with your sentiments, Gaz. However, perhaps if the media or 'powers that be' hadn't insisted on force-feeding blanket coverage of such to the nation, then the criticism you're referring to wouldn't have happened?

It's the recently increasing removal of one's free choices in other areas, not just this, and you'll know what I'm referring to in that respect, which is getting to become a concern for some about just how much of a free country we now actually live in...

7 pages thank god i got rid of tv... i will stick to my films.... but i do agree, that putting anything out on every channel is not democratic in any way. it can cause upset too, and im sure the queen wouldnt want that either. the broadcasters need to have a look at themselves, in trying to get best share of the ratings over this.
he was a decent man, and queen is a decent woman. All this does is marginalise them more through no fault of their own.

Yup, no excuse for that either, Adam. Just because I'm a footy fan, doesn't mean that I'm going to be guilty of double standards.

Trust me, I feel EXACTLY the same when England are playing an international friendly game against some nondescript team, which is of ZERO interest to me, but which the BBC and/or ITV have regardless deemed to be of great interest to the whole of the UK, and rather 'thoughtfully' rearranged the TV schedule accordingly!

There needs to be much less (often ill-considered) 'presumptions' made by the programme planners for what the majority of viewers want to watch, and instead far more consideration and thought put into what said majority *actually do* want to watch, plus more fairness applied when catering for the rest!

So just to be clear, Gwyn (apologies for referring to you earlier as Gavin - I just glanced at your username without reading it properly), are you saying that the licence fee was misused as a result of not offering people more of a free choice of what to watch?

I'm also interested in your reference to China...so are you saying [much as Grant did earlier] that our broadcasters, and/or those who control them, are guilty of communist behaviour? If so, I do agree, which is why I think it needs exposing and eradicating, lest we see more of such unsavoury and distinctly undemocratic behaviour from them in future.

Returning to the article Alan linked to earlier (see here: https://www.msn.com/en-gb/entertainm...?ocid=msedgntp) I had to laugh at the comments from Royal commentator, Richard Fitzwilliams, who due to his position is obviously heavily biased, I quote:

"The BBC’s coverage after the passing of the Duke of Edinburgh, has, as far as I have seen and heard, been exemplary".

Well it might've been "exemplary" if you're a card-carrying, flag-waving Royalist, but otherwise no!

As we've said, the programme planners, or whoever is behind these decisions to saturate mainstream TV with a particular topic (whatever it is), need to put their biases aside and get out of the bad habit of automatically presuming that the viewing public are as interested in what's been broadcast as they *think* they are, and worse, not imposing such control on people's ability to make THEIR OWN choice of what content to watch, especially such as with the BBC, on a platform that THE VIEWING PUBLIC/tax payers pay for!

Same here, but my point is that only if you're a royalist (or if not a masochist) would you have appreciated the 'blanket coverage', which is a somewhat polite way of putting it, as otherwise there's no way you'd have been able to have sat through it alll!

It would've been rather like asking a staunch Tory to watch endless reruns of Labour party political broadcasts, and like it!

Personally, I'd rather have stuck pins in my eyes...

I mentioned the TV license...saying it wont be long before it is £600 per annum...and not only that...we'll be paying to watch everything on television, having to subscribe to all mainstream channels...it's coming..Don't forget to put my cheque in the post BBC...
