Methods stretching way way into the future with capability, ( heads together for the good of everyone ) are here now that just require proper understanding of what they set out to achieve .

The stand out from the crowd, thinking like this, is the philosophy of free software. The faster its followed, the faster we escape the f****** hopeless that you refer to.

Governments gravitate to what is easy, rather than what will help humanity. they apply band aid solutions when found out by brave individuals , to what was morally wrong in the first place. Just look at these news stories as example https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-04-...ance/100064590 , what then follows, and we can now all look forward to is more mass surveillance of humans, as governments busily buy into that capability

leading to crap like this: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-04-...list/100063916

Things instantly begin to improve when we all turn off proprietary operating systems forever, and fight back like i did in 2003 and never looked back.

    Plenty of choices here https://distrowatch.com/
and full text of the philosophy here: https://www.fsf.org/
    and a youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJi2rkHiNqg
    Debians statement here: https://www.debian.org/intro/philosophy

But free software is so much more, as it is the ability to share information related to improvement of society, for the benefit of everyone.

Real commitment would see not subscribing to any social media , or using a mobile tracking device also called a phone , but some will find that difficult, if so do it in steps, by becoming aware of where
your information goes, and knowing that alternatives are there and you can be part of it.

Lovely place to grow up, Mike. We LOVE Orkney. Del and I went there for a holiday a few years ago (drove up from Glasgow where we were living at the time), and stopped at Skye en-route, which is another gorgeous place (we love the islands), and then crossed over to Orkney on the ferry from Thurso. We enjoyed seeing all the brochs (Broch of Gurness, etc), Standing Stones of Stenness, Scapa Flow and the Italian Chapel.

We just love places that are WAY off of the beaten track and evoke 'a land that time forgot', and I'm sure you'd agree Orkney is like that - totally unspoiled and unravaged by the worst aspects of modern life (gross commercialism and consumerism), which in many ways also applies to the Highlands of Scotland. Yes, it's colder up there and more remote than where we are now, but I lived in Scotland for over 30 years (Del 10 years), so we're used to it, and have regularly had winter holidays in places such as Austria and Switzerland, where it's been as cold as -30C!

Cold doesn't bother us - you just wrap up more in proper thermals!

I only remember going to Scotland once (I lived in Edinburgh up to age of about 18 months, as my dad was in the army, but that doesn't count).
My main memories of Arran are, beautiful place but impossible to come to terms with the bloody midges.

Edit: My mate ( a Scott, went off hill walking for a day while I went for cycle ride with our wives).
During the walk he had a dump, but was attacked by swarms of midges - he ended up running/staggering/rolling down Goat Fell with his trousers around his ankles.
My, how we laughed while his wife rubbed cream in to his buttocks that evening

    Yesh, that's 'cos you're a southern softie!D

No, I know what you mean. There's a MASSIVE difference between the climate (and warmth) where you are and even mainland Scotland, never mind the highlands! We feel it even when going from North Wales to Glasgow, to visit friends and family, but then simply adjust.

It's comes down to both what you're used to and feel comfortable with, and neither Del nor I have ever been 'sun worshipers' or people who can't function in cold weather. Don't get me wrong, we love sunny weather and warm climates too, but it's not a 'must' for either a holiday or somewhere to live. Different strokes for different folks

Nice pad, btw, of your 'current squeeze'. How much of her have you 'squeezed' so far?

    Another southern softie!

Del wants me to take her to the Ice Hotel in Sweden, for one of our anniversaries, see here: https://www.icehotel.com/

THAT's how much she LOVES snow, lol!!

And also to see the Northern Lights. Indeed a tour of Scandinavia is on the cards (and especially Finland) when things get more back to normal. We don't 'do' lying back on a deckchair on a beach for two weeks, doing feck all, in some nondescript package holiday resort!

Del would go bonkers, as she needs to be 'entertained'....
