Default A couple of new purchases today

After feeling really proud of myself moving a few bits on eBay, a couple of things turned up today, I just couldn't help it

Lot 1, an early Meridian 508 CD player with the CDM4 swing arm mech. Sounds lovely, I try to avoid the phrase "analogue sounding", but I'll just say it doesn't sound digital! Nice to have balanced outs on a CD player too, never had the option before, only on my DACs.

Lot 2, an Opera Consonance T99 pre amp with a pair of 6922 valves. Very nice sounding, but too early to say much more. I don't need a valve pre but it's always good to have one in reserve. (Or two I should say, forgot about the Tektron DHT pre boxed up in the wardrobe!)

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

    Nice 508. I'm still using a 507 that I bought new in 2003.
It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

I always wanted to try a Meridian CDP. You don't tend to see them going cheap s/h which says something I suppose.

The interesting thing about the Meridian is that I can't find all the usual arguments about the earlier version with the older chip and mech sounding better or worse than the later versions like you seem to with most things. Everyone seems happy with their own versions (as it should be!).

Been watching Meridian cd players on Ebay for ages, 200/203/208 etc Are the 508/7s just as good? What is a 508 worth?
