Emm, well thought I needed a phono cable with earth lead, but I;ve just connected my 1200gr with its original tonearm with a standard phono - both ends - and its fine, no buzz whatsoever, is there any point in buying one of these?

Is it likely to make a difference or should I spend my £40 on a trip to TEsco?

Who knows? But I'd still spend £40 at Tesco on a decent bottle of whiskey. £40 is nothing to spend on a tonearm cable, it probably costs something similar in parts and postage. Why not take a punt and then report back.

The new Technics turntables are self-grounded via the mains plug, you don't really need an earth lead if you're using the stock tonearm which is grounded to the chassis.
