In 1530 the combined troops of Charles V and Medici Pope Clement VII lay siege to Florence. The bell tower of San Miniato al Monte was part of the defences. Michelangelo Buonarroti, as he was good at most things, was put in charge of defending the city. He used the ploy of hanging mattresses on the outside of the tower to minimize damage from cannon fire.
Martin used the phrase as the attacking of the Wam may have produced incoming fire..

'Going to the mattresses' is a Cosa Nostra expression dating back to at least the 1930s. Whether there's an older Italian or Sicilian term I don't know.
If one family goes to war with another the soldiers and capos move out of their family homes and into a safe house, they have to bring a mattress with them to sleep on. Hence the term 'going to the mattresses' means 'going to war.'
You hear it used occasionally in mob-related tv and films.
