    I'm Gary.

    Default Another NOS

My name is Gary and I'm an audioholic

Dabbling in audio since i was 12 ..... now 48 and may have just hit audio nirvana!!!!!!!!!

I have a simple system but so far the most satisfying i have ever heard .
Doge6 valve CD player ( sad that there are so few in the western world)
Bluesound node 2 ( amazing for the cost of it) using deezer
Icon audio LA4 mk 2 preamp
    Shugang treasures cv181s + mullard GZ34
EAR 861 power amp ( new kid)
    Chord reference interconnect (pre power)
Home made Vandam interconnects for the rest
    Chord silver anniversary cable
    Neat momentum 3 speakers.

In the last 7 years I've been a power amp swinger and must have easily had 10, not that they were all bad but i would always be wondering could it be better?
Also my first valve power amp was the amazing WAD 5881 that does something with bass even at low levels that very few amps can. So my reference amp was hard to beat.

    I like a challenge.
A really good recording will sound good on anything but when you get an album that is messy and complex it takes the whole team effort to drag the vocals and instrument timbre by the scruff of the neck to front stage and poke it to perform.

95% of my listening is after 22.00 once the minister of home affairs has gone to bed. So i have a 30 Db max restricion. Its amazing how many serious amps cant perform at low levels.

It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

    Welcome to AoS Gary.

A measure of a good amp and system is how quiet you can play it before you loose much of the detail and a sense of dynamics. It's a good test.

What are your tastes in music?

    Enjoy the Forum

    Hello Barry.
Yes ive been battling with this listening restriction a while now.
Musical tastes have mellowed over the years and weirdly
Have been steered by what sounds good.

Acoustic rock (Damien rice, Newton Falkner, Leonard Cohen, Elbow)
Female vocals /jazz...ish ( Norah Jones, Katie Melua, Dianna Krall)
    Lightweight Classical music.

Anything that showcases instrument timbre and vocals.
Im not into angry agressive complex, rock or grimey stuff.

I also find music by people like Billie Eilish interesting and cleverly put together..
