The old ones look coarse enough to be a Whitworth thread maybe.
The word is 'valves' in this country, not tubes. Tubes are what Smarties come in!

Thanks, that makes sense, to me they looked slanted, but yes, just a coarser thread.

You can also buy 'self drilling' screws, which have a drill-type tip which will make a hole in metal the exact right size for the following thread. they come in various sizes and lengths, and should be easy to find at a specialist 'fasteners' shop. We have one in Preston called 'All Thread', other towns will have similar

Thanks I need countersunk heads though to hold the ply down.

I have 40mm self drillers with countersink heads (bought off Ebay), but won't be thick enough for what you're doing.

The one's I took out were only 6.5mm, be honest though I don't these self drillers would penetrate the steel plate on this van, the drill bits I was using only lasted a few holes and they were done, I'm just gonna have to spray from under the van, then lift up ply, flip it over, drill 2mm pilot hole, flip it over, then drill final hole with countersunk bit you recommended, what a palava! Don't really want to make any more holes in the van !

You're right Mike, I use the self drillers on aluminium, and probably aren't hard enough for steel. You know I even dreamt about your bloody van floor last night! I really need a holiday

Ah yes, the old BSW as opposed to BSF (fine). Takes me back to my old metalwork classes Maybe we should start a "Which thread is best" thread...

Oh I can't remember, I've slept since then I do remember though, that we were lifting the tiger skin rug before commencing work, and I remember the log effect electric fire in the corner and Barry White playing through some Audio Note speakers. I assumed it was you
