This has the full blessing of Marco, so here goes. This project has been bourne out of frustration with respects to Panzerholz no longer available but alternatives do exist which give the legendary damping properties of Panzerholz. So, I intend building and designing a new plinth for my Garrard 301. The cost of materials like Panzerholz and alternatives are not cheap. Working with these materials is also incredibly difficult and you really need CNC milling to get the best and most accurate results, this also costs money. So, I'm going to do this on my own irrespective but I wondered if any of you guys would like to show an expression of interest in purchasing a finalised plinth. My hopes are that we can push the cost of plinth production down and everyone gets a professionally produced plinth with excellent damping properties and a nice bump up the sonic ladder for their 301. I've already got a supplier and CNC specialist organised. My plinth design will hopefully incorporate an option to decouple the motor and the plinth will also house a totally decoupled armpod. If things go to plan I'm also thinking about designing a mounting board to house the turntable. The mounting board may incorporate tuned spring suspension and should also have excellent properties.
The whole project is something I'm going to do for myself and it's my aim to produce a comprehensive solution with respects to mitigating vibration into the Garrard 301's platter. Phew!
Comments, questions and put-downs most welcome.
