Just read up a bit on internet and it looks like it is usual for American scones to have icing or a dusting of icing sugar on top - apparently they are more like rock buns in texture.
Bit of a shock for me - apologies if I appear rude

I don't live in America , I live in Kalifornia.
And rudeness is as the heart of our culture, I still have not gotten the live to be offended thing down, so it's all good.
I will keep my eye out for proper scones. Yesterday I saw some dipped in a hard chocolate shell with mini M&Ms on top.

    Scottish scones.

    ingredients

250g/2 cups self-raising flour or plain flour and bicarb soda etc
    50g/¼ cup butter
    2 tbsp caster sugar
125ml/½ cup plain yoghurt or buttermilk
    65ml/¼ cup milk
    pinch of salt

    instructions

Heat the oven to 220c/200c fan/gas mark 7.
Sieve the flour into a large bowl, add the cold butter and gently rub them together with your finger tips.
Gently mix in the salt and sugar.
Whisk the yoghurt and milk together in a jug and then pour the liquid into the dry mix and cut into the mixture with a knife until it starts to come together.
Finish bringing the dough together with your hands (don't over do it), then roll out to 3-4 cm thick on a floured surface.
Cut into circles with a cookie cutter (dont twist it) and place on a baking sheet.
Brush with milk and bake for 12-15 minutes until well risen and starting to turn golden.
Remove from the oven and cool on a rack.
Serve with butter and jam while still warm.
    Enjoy!

You can also add any of, dried fruit, cherries and almond flakes if you desire

Burn, burn bright ya heretic! Sultanas and raisins perhaps, but cherries and almonds a bit dubious Apparently Oliver Cromwell banned mince pies. Merry Christmas, btw...
