Have you been to southern Ireland? I think that might have an even stronger claim to that name.

As it happens we have done both extremes - and survived. In parts of California the temperature goes up to around 45 degrees C, and in Sweden it goes down to -30 degrees C. I walked to work once at about -20 C - but obviously I had thick clothes on.

I think most people can get used to high or low temperature climates, though it might take a while. It also takes quite a long time to get back to coping with the weather in the UK.

Today it's not looking too bad and might stay dry, with some sun.

The real deal breaker with the US - and also many European countries - is the tea. In the US they make it with tea bags - and top it up with luke warm water - well it's actually quite hot, but not usually hot enough. Added to that, they usually use those Liptons yellow wrapped tea bags. Dire! Some European countries also use those Lipton "fake" tea bags - nothing like proper tea.

Yes I have. It was rainy. Especially on the south coast. Windy too. Went to the Marconi place (forget what it's called) and almost got blown into the sea.

I used to take tea bags and beer with me. Although did eventually find an offey in Las Vegas that sold Guinness and it was cheaper than in Sainsburys.

In one casino ('The Plaza') I asked if they had any Guinness and they brought me Newcastle Brown. 'Isn't it the same thing?' No, not really love.

I have been to Iceland, I don't think it does get that much ice, Greenland certainly is more icy.

Not much rain in my area, only about 600mm a year, that is a lot less than some hot countries, in Essex it is even drier. Stoke gets about 800mm per year on average.

I have been to southwest Ireland, it was sunny all week which is not what I wanted.

Irealnd should be called Greenland, Greenland should called Iceland and Iceland should be Lavaland.

I agree about tea abroad, most of it is stewed. They don't understand what stewed is. Some countries only have longlife milk, which is uck.

We used to have a Canadian at work, she hated english winters although she was used to much colder weather, I think it was the damp that got to her, seems Canada is much drier cold. Also know someone who went from UK to Canada but could not hack, had breathing problems and had to come back. I looked at California temps this week and they are around 33/34C max, which seems hot for mid October. Probably quite dry heat but even so, I prefer around 20C. I know people in Thailand, they don't really like the heat and they are used to it.

We had distant relatives (cousins two/three times removed) visit from Canada when I was a kid, I still remember them going on about how cold it felt in Hertfordshire - they felt it was the damp cold that they couldn't cope with.

I also remember having a holiday in Morocco, up in the Anti Atlas mountain area the temperature was in the thirties but felt fine as there was so little humidity - any perspiration evaporated immediately so I didn't get that horrible sticky feeling, really quite enjoyable as long as you kept hydrated.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”
