I can't see anything in your choice of equipment that suggests a mismatch that would result in the upper range stridency you experience. I'm wondering if you find that particular tweeter unsuited to your own listening. I found the same thing with Dynaudio speakers that I owned and listened to. Others saying they sounded great, but me finding them brash at the top. Strangely, the same has been said of some Tannoys, but I've always liked their treble quality (apart from the IIILZ model).

I had a demo with some Dyns, could not get on with them at all with Jazz, the cymbals just got irritating after a few minutes.

I'm quite sensitive to sound in general, I cannot stand it when I'm in say a cafe and somebody starts playing their tinny phone, a video or music, the dissonance really rattles me. Its either that or my listening room is a bit pants, not much to do about that. Somebody suggested the new Tannoy Eaton legacy, as they're on offer for £3K, slightly used, definitely way more than I'm used to spending.......

I use a Series 500 in my humble system and it plays great with rock and jazz. Bags of fun.

Mike, is it open plan to the kitchen or is there a door? If open plan then have you considered putting a roller type blind or something similar, possibly heavier that you can let down to obstruct the opening, you could have a separate one if there is a doorway opening. Hopefully this would help greatly acoustically.

I would imagine too many hard, reflective surfaces would result in a bright, fatiguing sound.

I would try and move the loudspeakers to see if any improvement is possible. Place some big soft cushions inside the room. Heavy curtains etc. Just try to get rid of some of the hard reflective surfaces. Assuming this is possible of course.

Are you able to have a listening position where there is nothing between the speakers and nothing between you and the speakers?

How far apart are the loudspeakers and how far away are you siting from them?
