    Indeed,
I think from my point of view; Mike should take a bit of time now to mull over all the contributions in this thread, and hopefuly he can find enough useful info that may help him decide where he wants to go with it.

Depends what Jazz you are playing, not all Jazz is plinky-plonk, what I might call lounge jazz.

Shit, these light bulbs are damn expensive! How can you tell they're not all used up? I got a box of tubes with the S500 I bought, with their original boxes, shall I stick 'em on ebay and call them NOS!

    Lol@lightbulbs...

Seriously though, that smallest lightbulb at the front I think is potentially the biggest cause of the 'strident' effect you're hearing, so would strongly recommend that you upgrade it, as outlined.

I'll have a shufty and see if I can find that 5751 I had... Would you be able to do without a little gain? Just means that you'd have to turn the volume up a bit more that's all. Most amps these days, receiving a digital signal, have too much gain.

Gosh, got the Soro back in now, playing the same Robert Wyatt album I was playing last night, the S500 seems to handle it better, vinyl set up far from perfect though! Using a Denon dl110 with 1500 +hrs on it and a bent cantilever!

My Prima Luna's play plinky plonk and rock. They certainly boogie so not all valve amps are just for jazz. Audio Innovations from memory have always been a little on the lean side. There seems to be a natural assumption that they are a good match for the AN speakers? However, i once took my Beard P100 to a colleague's house and hooked it up to his type K's and he was nearly in tears when he heard just how much better they sounded on my battered and bruised old Beard compared to hos AI mono's.

Yes but Mike’s looks as if he has valve issues, and possibly your friends. Both S500s I had with the right valves in worked with good bass from Snell Js and Kef model 3.2s

Happy to experiment with different valves, but I doubt whether they will make enough of a change to tame the strident top end coming out of the Js, with jazz wind instruments anyway, the bass is quite lovely as it is. I do like the J's, but I may search for something else in time. The sound of the S500 is also, to me anyway, very close to the Soro.

I can't see anything in your choice of equipment that suggests a mismatch that would result in the upper range stridency you experience. I'm wondering if you find that particular tweeter unsuited to your own listening. I found the same thing with Dynaudio speakers that I owned and listened to. Others saying they sounded great, but me finding them brash at the top. Strangely, the same has been said of some Tannoys, but I've always liked their treble quality (apart from the IIILZ model).
It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

Has your Shure cartridge arrived yet, Mike?
