My wife was recently diagnosed with Latent Autoimmune Diabetes. Kind of falls between type 1 and 2 diabetes. But it doesn't have a full classification yet. Thought to be hereditary in part. Anyhow she was having persistent fasting blood glucose between 6 -8mmol/l and was symptomatic i.e. thirsty and peeing a lot. The book by Dr Michael Mosley (the one on the television quite a bit) called 'The 8 Week Blood Sugar Diet Recipe Book was recommended to her by the Diabetes Nurse Specialist. She already exercised quite a lot so didn't have to do more of that. She followed it and has managed to get her blood glucose well under control, lost a little weight in the process and feels an awful lot better. No drugs involved. Could be worth a try for people. Some of the recipes are very nice too. I'm not on a commission by the way!

My brother was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes about 25 years ago after becoming very unwell and rushed into hospital where he fell into a coma. His blood sugar measured 34 at it's peak and it was touch and go if he would recover. The hospital (Queen Elizabeth in Birmingham) nursed him back to health but it has been a long struggle to control his condition. He's tried many different regimes of treatment over the years and now has an insulin pump which measures his blood sugar and delivers the correct dose of insulin automatically. The manufactures made the pump look like an ipod to blend into every day life. He still has to keep to a healthy diet and lifestyle but the regime works for him. He also has to have regular checks on peripheral limbs and eyes.
As I am a close relative and blessed with an ample physic I check my blood sugar regularly but thankfully I'm ok.

diabetes can be deadly , A friend of mines brother was lost to it
1st he had some toes removed the his foot , later a lower leg , He then lost his sige due to diabetes
Over several years he was consumed by it and sadly died as a result of diabetes
When you are next at the doc's as for a test , It could save your life

I am Type 11 and have been for about 10 years. Doctor said eat a mediterranean diet, basically thats what I do, lost 17 pounds in weight within a year. I went 3 years without meds then one metformin tablet twice a day. Last two years increased to two a day. I have started doing a lot more exercise recently to try and keep it under control and now eat very little meat. No vino, only about 4 units of beer a week.
I feel fine and have no other health issues so hopefully it doesnt progress any further.......
