I have had a similar trial and error path. I think I probably could have stuck with the Meridian 557 and a good passive pre-amp and had as good as I have now, but still I have ended up with a very nice sounding valve amp, albeit a bit pricey.

I am not sure about my phono stage, it sound pretty good but is a bit unwieldy when switching from MM to MC, plug and unplug. I was wondering if you could give me a steer on the EAR 834P clone, I know they can be very good, and a genuine one is a bit out of my reach.

the 834p I have is an mm only version so I was using it with an SUT when using an mc . I see you have one in your sig so you could probably use that if you got one I would imagine.

You can get them with switchable mc but the mc gain circuit isn't up to much, certainly not in the league of a decent SUT.

The phono in the pics is only slightly more expensive and sounds better than even the highly modified EAR stage, plus it has a proper mc stage. I would thoroughly recommend it.

Alternatively I'd be happy to lend you my 834p for you to have a listen to and try with your SUT.

It's sitting here not doing much at the moment so just pay the postage and hopefully it will help you decide if you want to change.
